Ngebray.com,- Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo has died after battling late-stage liver cancer. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was a prominent participant in the Tiananmen pro-democracy protests of 1989. He was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for ‘inciting subversion of state power’.
Liu helped write a petition known as ‘Charter 08’ calling for sweeping political reforms. He was recently moved from jail to a hospital for treatment. Rights groups & Western governments had urged China to allow Liu & his wife to leave the country for treatment abroad. But China warned against interference. Liu Xiaobo died at the age of 61.
